Plumbing cost in Cedar City: what common jobs run and what moves the price
Plumbing prices swing with what the plumber finds, not with the name of the job. These are wide planning ranges for nine common jobs, with the things that push a job toward the low or high end. They are not quotes.
Before you compare prices
- FIRST
- Get the problem found, not guessed
- THEN
- Ask for a written quote by line
- LAST
- Compare the lines, not the totals
Typical ranges for common plumbing jobs in Cedar City
Each range below is a planning figure for a standard home job. A tight crawl space, a corroded fitting or an unusual pipe can push a job past the top. A simple swap can land under the bottom. Use the ranges to know whether a quote is in the neighborhood, then ask the plumber to explain any gap.
| Job | Typical range | What moves the price |
|---|---|---|
| Tank water heater replacement | $1,200 to $2,800 | Tank size (40 or 50 gallons), gas or electric, venting, and any expansion tank the code calls for |
| Tankless water heater installation | $2,500 to $4,800 | Gas line size, electrical panel capacity and the exterior venting route |
| Drain cleaning with a cable | $100 to $800 | Cleanout access, and whether the clog is at one sink or in the main branch line |
| Hydro jetting a main sewer line | $350 to $1,000 | Footage of pipe, roots or grease, and cleanout access |
| Slab leak detection and spot repair | $600 to $4,500 | Time to locate the leak, foundation depth, and breaking concrete versus rerouting the line overhead |
| Trenchless sewer pipe lining | $1,900 to $8,500 | Footage lined, pipe diameter and the condition of the old pipe |
| Whole-house repiping with PEX | $4,000 to $12,000 | Home size, number of bathrooms, and how hard the walls are to reach on one or two floors |
| Garbage disposal replacement | $100 to $550 | Motor size, outlet access and the sink flange type |
| Gas line repair or short extension | $150 to $1,400 | Length of the run, pressure testing and the appliance connection |
Planning ranges only, not quotes. They were checked against published cost guides in October 2026; no source publishes Cedar City prices for these jobs.
What moves the price more than the job name
Two homes can need the same repair and get very different bills. Four things account for most of the gap.
- **Access.** A pipe behind a finished wall or under a slab costs more to reach than one in an open crawl space.
- **Condition.** Corroded fittings, brittle old pipe and failed shutoff valves turn a one-part fix into a bigger one.
- **Scope found on the day.** A camera or a pressure test can show a second problem that the phone description did not.
- **What comes after.** Patching walls, flooring and finish work are often separate jobs from the plumbing itself.
Hard water and the water heater line
A USGS estimate for Iron County puts water hardness at about 13.1 grains per gallon, which is very hard. It is a county estimate, not a reading at your tap.
Scale shortens the life of tanks and clogs tankless units, so ask whether a flush, a softener or a descaling plan belongs on the quote as its own line. The water softener page explains what to ask for.

Ask a plumber what is driving the price of your job
Describe the problem and a plumber can explain what drives the price before any work starts.
How to read a written plumbing quote
A single total tells you nothing. A quote you can compare has separate lines, so you can see what you are paying for and what you can decline.
- Labor, parts and materials on separate lines
- Any permit, and who applies for it
- The cost of hauling away the old unit or pipe
- What is excluded, such as wall repair or flooring
- The warranty on parts and on the labor, in writing
- What happens to the price if the plumber finds a second problem
Extras not in the ranges: permits, drying and cleanup
- Permits and inspections, where the city requires them. Permit rules are set locally, so ask the plumber or the Cedar City Building Department.
- Drying and cleanup after water damage. See water damage restoration for what that covers and what it does not.
- Drywall, paint, flooring and cabinet work after a repair.
- Utility work on the gas or water company’s side of the meter.
- A second visit, if parts need to be ordered.
Slab leaks, sewer lining and the other big price swings
Four jobs on the list carry the biggest swings, and each one swings for a different reason.
- **Slab leak:** locating the leak and deciding between breaking concrete and rerouting the line can double the bill. See slab leak repair.
- **Sewer lining:** price follows footage and the pipe’s condition. A camera pass has to come first, so ask for the video. See trenchless repair.
- **Repiping:** a bigger house with more bathrooms means more pipe and more wall access. See whole-house repiping.
- **Hydro jetting:** heavy roots take longer than grease. See hydro jetting.
Ways to keep a small problem from becoming a larger bill
- Shut off the water at the main as soon as a leak will not stop, then call.
- Run the meter test when a bill jumps. The steps are on the leak detection page.
- Photograph the damage and the source before anything is moved.
- Act on a slow drain or a dripping valve before it becomes a backup or a burst.
- Insulate exposed pipes before a hard freeze. The frozen pipe page has the checklist.
None of that replaces a plumber, but it gives the plumber a head start and keeps the damage that sits outside the plumbing quote small.
Cost questions Cedar City homeowners ask
Why can nobody give me a fixed price over the phone?
The same symptom can have several causes, and the cause sets the price. A plumber has to see the problem, check access and test the line before quoting it. A figure given sight unseen is a guess.
Do these ranges include a permit?
No. Permit rules are set by the city, and where one is needed it is usually its own line on the quote. Ask the plumber whether a permit applies and who files it, or ask the Cedar City Building Department directly.
Is a camera inspection part of a sewer quote?
Not always. Ask whether the camera pass is included, and ask for the recording. It is what shows whether a line needs cleaning, lining or digging, and the price depends on which.
Why do other websites list different prices?
Most published figures are national or state averages built from different job mixes. They show a general scale, not what a given plumber will charge for your house. Treat every published range, including these, as a starting point.
Will my insurance pay for the repair?
It depends on your policy and on the cause. Sudden damage is often treated differently from wear or neglect. Call your insurer early, keep photos and the plumber’s note of what failed, and ask what they need before anything is thrown out.
