Toilet repair and installation · Cedar City, Utah
Toilet installation in Cedar City, UT, plus repair for running, leaking, rocking and clogged toilets
Some toilets need a part. Some need replacing. A few are quietly wasting water while the house sleeps. Work out which one you have, and what a new toilet really involves, before you pick a fix.
Toilet overflowing?
- FIRST
- Lift the tank lid and push the flapper closed
- THEN
- Turn the supply valve behind the toilet clockwise
- SEWAGE IN A TUB
- Stop using water and call

What is your toilet doing? Running, weak flush, rocking or leaking
Toilets fail in a handful of ways, and each has a short list of causes. Match what you see to the row below before deciding whether this is a ten-minute fix or a new toilet.
| What you notice | Usual cause | First safe step |
|---|---|---|
| Runs after flushing, or hisses | A flapper that no longer seals, or a worn fill valve | Jiggle the handle and check the chain. Then run the dye test below. |
| Weak or slow flush | Low water in the tank, clogged rim jets or a partial clog | Check that the tank fills to the marked line. Try a plunger. |
| Rocks or wobbles on the floor | Loose closet bolts, or a worn wax ring or flange | Do not force it. A wobble that is ignored can break the seal. |
| Water around the base | The wax ring, a loose bolt or the supply connection | Dry the floor, then watch whether water appears at rest or only after a flush. |
| Drops of water on the outside of the tank | Condensation from humid air | Not a leak. Dry it and see whether it returns without a flush. |
| Clogs again and again | A partial clog, or a line problem beyond the toilet | See the clog section below. |
The silent leak: a toilet that runs when nobody is looking
A toilet can leak from the tank to the bowl with no sound at all. You never see water on the floor, and the only evidence is on the bill. It is one of the most common reasons for a higher bill with no visible leak.
- Remove the tank lid and add a few drops of food coloring to the tank.
- Do not flush. Wait fifteen minutes.
- If color shows up in the bowl, the flapper or fill valve is leaking.
- Flush to clear the dye, and put the lid back.
No one on the city side is checking this for you
Cedar City’s 2024 water conservation plan says the city has no active leak detection program, and customer meters are read monthly.
A silent toilet leak shows up first on your bill, so check each toilet with the dye test whenever the bill rises with no clear cause.

If every toilet passes and the bill is still high, the leak is somewhere else. Run the testing the meter for leaks before assuming anything.
Toilet running, leaking or rocking?
Call and describe what it does. The plumber can tell you whether it is a part or a new toilet.
Repair the toilet or replace it?
Most toilet problems are a part, and a part is cheaper than a new toilet. Some are not, and spending on a repair that will not hold is the costly choice.
Usually repairable
- A flapper, fill valve or handle that has worn out
- A wax ring or loose bolts
- A supply line or shutoff valve that drips
- A clog that clears with a plunger or auger
Usually means a new toilet
- A crack in the bowl or the tank, even a hairline one that leaks
- A glazed bowl that stains or clogs after repeated cleaning
- Several repairs in a short time
- A toilet that no longer suits the users, such as one that is too low
Choosing a toilet: rough-in, height, bowl shape and dual flush
Most of the choices are about fit. Check the rough-in before anything else, because a toilet that does not match it will not install.
| Choice | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Rough-in | The distance from the finished wall to the center of the floor drain. Twelve inches is common, but ten and fourteen exist. | A toilet built for one rough-in does not fit another |
| Seat height | Standard height or taller comfort height | Comfort and ease of standing for older or taller users |
| Bowl shape | Round or elongated | Elongated bowls need a few more inches of room |
| Flush system | Gravity, pressure-assisted or dual flush | Noise, clog resistance and how much water each flush uses |
| Replacement parts | Whether the fill valve and flapper are standard sizes | Repairs later are simpler and quicker |
Dual flush toilet installation is worth asking about if reducing water use matters to you. A dual-flush toilet has two buttons, one for a smaller flush and one for a full flush. It has more parts than a basic toilet, so ask what the plumber would stock to repair it.
A high-efficiency toilet, dual flush or not, lists its gallons per flush on the tank or the box. Compare that number rather than relying on the label alone.

What toilet installation involves, and when relocation changes the job
- The water supply is shut off and the tank and bowl are emptied.
- The old toilet is lifted off and the flange and floor around it are inspected.
- A new seal is set on the flange, and the new toilet is set and bolted down evenly.
- The supply line is connected and the toilet is tested for leaks and a full, steady flush.
The flange and subfloor are the step people overlook. A cracked flange or soft floor under the old toilet should be fixed before the new one goes down, or the new toilet will rock and leak the same way.
Moving a toilet to a different spot is a bigger job, because the drain has to move with it. That can mean opening the floor. Relocating a drain is the kind of work a building department may want to know about, so ask the plumber whether a permit applies in Cedar City and who files it.
Hard water and the parts inside the tank
What very hard water does to toilet parts
A USGS estimate based on Iron County samples puts water hardness at about 13 grains per gallon, classed as very hard. That is a county estimate, not a measurement of your tap.
Mineral scale builds up on fill valves and flappers and can plug the small rim jets under the bowl. If a toilet with a full tank still flushes weakly, ask the plumber to check the jets, and expect to replace tank parts more often than in a softer-water home.

A clogged toilet: plunge first, then decide whether it is the line
Use a flange plunger, the kind with a rubber extension, and push firmly several times. Do not keep flushing while you wait, because the bowl can overflow. If the bowl is rising, close the supply valve behind the toilet.
Skip liquid drain openers. They can leave caustic water in the bowl that is dangerous to touch. If the toilet clogs again soon after, or if other fixtures gurgle or back up when you flush, the blockage is further down. That is a drain line cleaning question, not a toilet question.

Toilet problems that cannot wait
Needs a plumber now
- Water spilling from the bowl or base that will not stop
- Sewage coming up in a tub or shower when you flush
- A cracked tank or bowl that is leaking
- A toilet that will not shut off with the valve closed
Can be planned
- A toilet that runs now and then
- A weak flush that still clears
- A seat that is loose
- A new toilet you want to plan
Toilet questions: running, rocking and sizing
Why does my toilet keep running on its own?
Usually the flapper at the bottom of the tank no longer seals, or the fill valve is worn, so water keeps passing into the bowl. Add food coloring to the tank and wait fifteen minutes without flushing. If color reaches the bowl, the flapper or valve is the problem, and replacing the part normally fixes it.
How do I know what size toilet will fit my bathroom?
Measure the rough-in: the distance from the finished wall behind the toilet to the center of the floor drain. Twelve inches is common, but ten and fourteen exist. Then check how much room you have in front for a round or an elongated bowl. A plumber can confirm both before you buy.
My toilet rocks. Do I need a new toilet?
Not usually. A rocking toilet more often has loose closet bolts or a worn seal, and sometimes a damaged flange or soft floor underneath. Do not keep using a toilet that rocks, because the seal can break and leak into the floor. A plumber can check the flange and floor before deciding.
Does a toilet installation include moving the toilet?
A standard installation replaces a toilet in the same spot. Moving it changes the drain location, which can mean opening the floor and possibly a permit. Ask the plumber whether a permit applies in Cedar City and who files it before work begins.
